Program Description

Along with dealing with familiar insect pests in the landscape, such as specific caterpillars, aphids, spider mites and many others, Massachusetts residents are also becoming familiar with such exotic invaders as hemlock woolly adelgid, viburnum leaf beetle, lily leaf beetle, Asian longhorn beetle, winter moth and more.  This talk will detail the importance of these pests, their identification and biology and will also address the strategies available for their management, how to implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, cultural practices, biological controls, and the use of organic and bio-rational options along with standard pesticide practices.

Guest Presenter: Robert D. Childs, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Bob has been an instructor of entomology at UMass Amherst since 1984.  He currently teaches 3 entomology courses per year at UMass with the bulk of his students being enrolled in the Stockbridge School of Agriculture.  In addition to teaching, Bob also has an Extension appointment to the Landscape, Nursery and Urban Forestry program.  His role there is to provide accurate and timely diagnostics of insect pests, make recommendations for pest control, write about current trends in pest identification and management, and to act as an overall resource for the Green Industry.

Don’t miss this program. We guarantee a fun and informative time.
